“Whenever you get something you had from 30, 40, even 50 years ago, it just brings those most clouded memories back to life,” Paul explains.
From Cadbury Flake bars and Curly Wurly to Digestive biscuits and other timeless favourites, Simply British Foods specializes in imported delicacies from the United Kingdom and Ireland. The shop has become a cornerstone for expats seeking a taste of home and for locals curious about British and Irish culture.
“I’m English by birth,” Paul says. “I came here as a youngster, and I’ve lived in Canada for most of my life. But I love that I can offer expats the best of Britain—and some Irish favourites—right here in our community.”

For Paul, success isn’t just about stocking shelves with sweets and biscuits. It’s about people.
“It is all about customer relationships,” he explains. “You’ve got to know their names. At the end of the day, you can’t take anything for granted as a small business. You might have customers today, but you might not have them tomorrow. That’s why trust matters.”

“The food industry is moving all the time,” he says. “It’s just what’s the next thing. There are lots of limited-edition items that come and go, but you’ve also got to keep the stalwarts—the things that people have loved forever.”
Running his own shop gives Paul the freedom to adapt quickly. “I love being my own boss. I get to make the decisions and the choices to do my own thing. But it is constantly about evolving and changing. You have to. It’s the name of the game.”

Of course, with independence comes responsibility. As Paul points out, small businesses can’t afford to take risks.
