New changes to OHIP that travellers need to know about.

As of January 1, 2020 the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) will no longer cover out-of-country emergency medical expenses.

If you’re heading out of the country, make sure you have suitable personal travel insurance coverage. Insured Ontario residents will continue to receive coverage for physician and hospital services when visiting or moving to another Canadian province or territory.

Many Ontarians do have travel health insurance through their workplace plans or credit cards, but these coverages can be minimal and therefore travellers are encouraged to carry private coverage when travelling outside of Canada.

Here are a few things to keep in mind.

It’s important to take some time and do a bit of research before purchasing a policy.

Don't Forget!
Travel insurance is easy to overlook but very important and must be purchased in your home province before your departure. When you're planning your next getaway remember to add it to your to-do list.

Don’t settle for the lowest price.
Consider what coverage is best for your needs and look at the different types of policies and degrees of protection. There's nothing worse than finding out you don't have coverage for something that would've cost only a few extra dollars on your premium.

Always be honest.
It’s very important to answer questionnaires honestly and accurately. Ensure that you disclose any pre-existing health conditions to your insurance company, this will give you the peace of mind to know that you're properly covered if anything happens while on vacation.
